What Is a Psychiatric Evaluation?
A psychiatric evaluation is a structured clinical assessment conducted by a psychiatric provider to establish a diagnostic formulation and treatment plan. It is the essential first step in psychiatric care -- the foundation upon which all subsequent treatment decisions are built. A thorough evaluation distinguishes between conditions that present similarly, identifies comorbidities, and clarifies the most effective treatment approach for your specific situation.
Unlike a general medical visit or a therapy intake, a psychiatric evaluation focuses on diagnostic precision and pharmacological treatment planning. Your provider gathers detailed information about symptoms, onset, duration, severity, functional impact, and prior treatment response to develop an individualized clinical picture.
What We Evaluate
Our diagnostic scope includes major depressive disorder, generalized and social anxiety, panic disorder, ADHD, PTSD, OCD, bipolar spectrum disorders, insomnia, PMDD, and other psychiatric conditions. We assess for substance use comorbidity, medical contributors to psychiatric symptoms (thyroid dysfunction, vitamin deficiencies, sleep disorders), and medication interactions. Prior diagnoses are reviewed and validated or revised as clinically indicated.
What to Expect at Your First Visit
The evaluation appointment lasts approximately 45-60 minutes. You will complete standardized intake questionnaires before or at the start of your visit. During the session, your provider conducts a clinical interview covering your presenting concerns, psychiatric history, medical history, family psychiatric history, substance use, medications, and psychosocial context.
At the conclusion of the evaluation, your provider will share their diagnostic impression and recommended treatment plan. If medication is indicated, prescriptions can often be initiated the same day. If additional data is needed -- such as GeneSight testing or collateral information -- the next steps are clearly outlined.
What to Bring
Insurance card, government-issued ID, a complete list of current medications and supplements, and any prior psychiatric or psychological records available to you. Previous documentation accelerates the evaluation but is not required.
Insurance and Payment
Initial psychiatric evaluations are covered by most insurance plans, including SelectHealth, PEHP, Regence, Molina, University of Utah Health Plans, and Utah Medicaid. Cash-pay rates are available for uninsured patients. We recommend verifying benefits before your first appointment.
