What Is GeneSight?
GeneSight is a pharmacogenomic test -- a painless cheek swab that analyzes how your DNA affects the way your body processes psychiatric medications. The results show which medications are more likely to work for you, which may need a different dose, and which are more likely to cause problems.
It is not a crystal ball. But it gives us and you real data to work with instead of relying on trial and error alone.
Who Should Get Tested
GeneSight is most helpful for patients who have tried two or more psychiatric medications without good results -- either they did not work or the side effects were more than they could handle. It is also a smart option if you are starting psychiatric medication for the first time and want to reduce the guesswork.
The test covers medications used for ADHD, depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, PTSD, and more -- including common names like Zoloft, Lexapro, Adderall, Vyvanse, Wellbutrin, and Lamictal.
How It Works
The test is a cheek swab. It takes about 30 seconds and is done right in our office. The sample is sent to a lab, and results are typically ready within a week. Your provider sits down with you to review the results and use them to adjust or select your medications.
Insurance and Cost
Most insurance plans cover GeneSight testing. For patients whose insurance does not, GeneSight offers a financial assistance program that typically limits out-of-pocket cost to $330 or less. We can check your coverage before ordering.
Why It Matters
Trying medication after medication -- waiting weeks each time to see if it works -- is exhausting. It can make you feel like nothing will help. GeneSight does not guarantee the perfect medication, but it helps us narrow the field and make better choices sooner. That is time and frustration you get back.
