What is GeneSight Testing?
GeneSight is a pharmacogenomic test -- it looks at your DNA to understand how your body processes psychiatric medications. A simple cheek swab, no blood draw, and results come back in about a week. The report shows your provider which medications your body is likely to respond well to, which may need dose changes, and which ones might cause problems.
Roughly 40% of people do not do well on the first psychiatric medication they try. GeneSight helps shorten the trial-and-error process so you can get to the right treatment faster.
Who Should Consider It
GeneSight is most useful for patients who have already tried one or more medications without good results -- whether the medication did not work, caused difficult side effects, or stopped being effective. It is also helpful if your family has a history of unusual medication responses.
We use GeneSight for depression, anxiety, ADHD, PTSD, bipolar disorder, OCD, and other conditions. The test covers more than 60 FDA-approved medications.
How It Works
Two minutes. Your provider swabs the inside of your cheek and sends the sample to the lab. Results are back in 5-7 business days. Your provider reviews the report with you and explains what it means for your treatment going forward.
Insurance and Cost
Most insurance covers GeneSight, including Medicare and many Medicaid plans. Financial assistance is available for patients who are uninsured or underinsured. Out-of-pocket cost is typically $0-$330. We clarify your costs before ordering.
What It Does Not Do
GeneSight does not diagnose conditions or choose your medication for you. It gives your provider better data to make informed prescribing decisions. Your symptoms, your history, and your provider's clinical judgment still drive the treatment plan. GeneSight just makes that process smarter.
