What Is GeneSight?
GeneSight is a pharmacogenomic test that uses a simple cheek swab to analyze how your body processes different psychiatric medications. The results show which medications are more likely to work well for you, which might need dosage adjustments, and which are more likely to cause side effects.
It does not replace a clinical evaluation. But it adds valuable information that can save you months of trial and error -- especially if previous medications have not worked the way you hoped.
Who Should Get Tested
GeneSight is a good fit if you have tried two or more psychiatric medications and they either did not help or caused difficult side effects. It is also helpful if you are starting medication for the first time and want to make a more informed decision from the start.
The test covers medications used for ADHD, depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, PTSD, and more -- including Zoloft, Lexapro, Adderall, Vyvanse, Wellbutrin, Effexor, and Lamictal.
How It Works
The test is a painless cheek swab done in our office. It takes about 30 seconds. The sample goes to a lab, and results come back within about a week. Your provider reviews the results with you and uses them to guide your medication plan.
Insurance and Cost
Most insurance plans cover GeneSight. For patients whose insurance does not, GeneSight offers a financial assistance program that caps out-of-pocket costs at around $330. We will check your coverage before ordering the test so you know what to expect.
Why It Matters
In a region like Northern Arizona where psychiatric providers can be hard to find, wasting months on medications that do not work is not just frustrating -- it can feel like lost time you cannot afford. GeneSight helps us make smarter decisions earlier in your treatment.
