High achievers, high anxiety

Denver attracts ambitious people. Engineers at Lockheed Martin, nurses at UCHealth and Denver Health, founders in RiNo co-working spaces, and transplants who moved here for a better life and big views. Many of them run hard, then wonder why they cannot slow down at night. The same drive that builds a career can also wire your nervous system for constant alarm.

Anxiety is not a personality trait. It is a treatable medical condition, and you do not have to white-knuckle it.

Signs it is more than stress

  • You check Slack or email the second you wake up, heart already racing
  • Sunday afternoons fill with dread about the week
  • Your shoulders live up near your ears
  • Sleep is short and broken, even after a long day outside
  • You avoid networking events or happy hours in LoDo because they spike your nerves
  • You have had a panic attack and now fear the next one

Altitude, caffeine, and cannabis

A few local factors can make anxiety louder. New arrivals at altitude may notice poor sleep and a faster heartbeat in their first weeks, which can feel a lot like anxiety. Strong coffee culture does not help. And while cannabis is legal in Colorado, high-THC products can trigger or worsen anxiety and panic in many people, even if they seem to help at first. Your provider will ask about all of it without judgment, because these details shape the right plan.

The evaluation

Expect a focused conversation about your symptoms, history, work, sleep, and substance use. Quick scales like the GAD-7 help measure where you start. We also check for medical causes, such as thyroid problems or medicines that cause jitteriness. If you want a full assessment, book a psychiatric evaluation.

Treatment that gets results

First-line medicines for most anxiety disorders are daily SSRIs or SNRIs, such as escitalopram, sertraline, or venlafaxine XR. They are not addictive. Improvement builds over several weeks, and full effect can take about two months. Another once-a-day choice is buspirone. Propranolol may help with situational anxiety, like a big pitch. We use benzodiazepines sparingly, if at all, because of dependence risk.

We set clear goals: better sleep, fewer panic attacks, more focus, and the ability to enjoy your weekends. Then we measure progress and adjust. You will always know why we are making a change.

OCD in a high-performance world

Obsessive-compulsive disorder sometimes hides behind perfectionism. Rewriting the same email ten times, re-checking code or numbers until late at night, or getting stuck on intrusive thoughts you cannot shake can all be signs. OCD is a real condition, not just being detail-oriented, and SSRIs are an effective treatment, usually at higher doses with a timeline of a few months. We will map out the plan with you.

Transplant life and loneliness

Many Denverites moved here without family or old friends nearby. Building a social life from scratch while working long hours can leave you anxious and isolated. If loneliness is feeding your worry, say so. It is part of the picture, and we factor it into your care.

Panic at work: what to do in the moment

If panic hits during a meeting or on the light rail, remind yourself that it will peak and pass, usually within minutes. Slow your breathing: in for four counts, out for six. Name five things you can see. Then follow up with care, because panic that keeps returning deserves treatment, not just coping tricks. The goal is fewer attacks, not just better survival skills.

Getting the most from your first visit

Bring a list of medicines and supplements, including pre-workouts and nootropics, since some contain stimulants that fuel anxiety. Note your typical caffeine and cannabis use. Think about what you want to be different in three months. We will use that to set targets and measure progress.

Smarter medication choices

If you have tried medicines with poor results, GeneSight testing reports how certain genes influence the way you process psychiatric medicines. It is a data point that can make the next decision less of a guess.

Anxiety FAQs

Can cannabis make anxiety worse?
Yes. High-THC cannabis can trigger or worsen anxiety and panic for many people. Your provider will ask about use without judgment and help you understand how it fits into your symptoms.
Does living at altitude affect anxiety?
New arrivals often have poorer sleep and a faster heartbeat at first, which can feel like anxiety. Your provider can help separate altitude effects from an anxiety disorder.
I am a high performer. Do I really need treatment?
Success and anxiety often go together. If worry is hurting your sleep, health, or relationships, treatment can help you perform well without the constant alarm.
What medications treat anxiety without being addictive?
SSRIs, SNRIs, and buspirone are common non-addictive options. Your provider will explain how each works and what to expect.
