What Is a Psychiatric Evaluation?
A psychiatric evaluation is a structured clinical conversation between you and a psychiatric provider. The goal is to figure out what is going on -- whether that is ADHD, anxiety, depression, PTSD, bipolar disorder, or something else -- and build a treatment plan that actually fits your life.
It is not a checklist. It is not a personality quiz. And it is not an interrogation. It is a provider asking the right questions, listening carefully, and using clinical training to connect the dots.
What We Evaluate
We assess a wide range of conditions including ADHD, generalized anxiety, panic disorder, social anxiety, major depression, bipolar disorder, PTSD, OCD, insomnia, and PMDD. We evaluate adults, teens, and children. Many patients come in thinking they have one thing and leave with a clearer picture of what is actually driving their symptoms.
What to Expect at Your First Visit
Your first appointment is about 60 minutes. We will ask about your current symptoms, how long they have been going on, your medical history, family history, and anything you have tried before. If medication is appropriate, many patients leave with a prescription the same day. If we need more information -- like lab work or GeneSight testing -- we will explain why and move quickly.
Insurance and Payment
Psychiatric evaluations are covered by most insurance plans. We accept Anthem Blue Cross, Aetna, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, and Health First Colorado (Medicaid). Kaiser patients can use our cash pay option. We will verify your benefits before your first visit so there are no surprises.
When to Get Evaluated
If something has felt off for weeks or months -- trouble sleeping, trouble concentrating, mood swings, constant worry, emotional numbness, irritability that you cannot explain -- a psychiatric evaluation is the right first step. You do not need a referral from another doctor. You do not need to have tried therapy first. You just need to show up.
