What Is GeneSight Testing?
GeneSight is a DNA-based test that shows how your body processes psychiatric medications. Everyone's genetics are different -- that is why one person responds well to Zoloft and another gets side effects with no benefit. GeneSight removes the guesswork from prescribing by showing which medications are most likely to work for you.
The test covers medications for depression, anxiety, ADHD, PTSD, bipolar disorder, and more. It does not diagnose anything -- it guides medication selection.
How It Works
A simple cheek swab. No blood draw. Takes about 30 seconds at our office. Results come back in roughly a week. Your provider reviews them with you and uses the data to guide your medication plan.
Results are color-coded: green means use as directed, yellow means moderate interaction, red means significant interaction. Medications in the red zone are more likely to cause problems for you specifically.
Who Should Consider GeneSight
GeneSight makes the most sense if you have tried two or more medications that did not work or caused bad side effects. It is also useful if you are starting treatment for the first time and want to skip the trial-and-error approach. Veterans and service members who have been through multiple medication changes often benefit the most from this test.
Insurance and Payment
GeneSight is covered by most major insurance plans including TRICARE and Medicare. Out-of-pocket costs for commercially insured patients are typically $330 or less. Financial assistance programs are available. We check your coverage before ordering.
What Happens After the Test
Your provider walks through the results with you. If a current medication is in the red zone, we discuss alternatives. If you are starting fresh, we use the results to pick the medication your body is most likely to handle well. It is one of the most practical tools we have for getting you on the right track faster.
