What is GeneSight Testing?
GeneSight is a pharmacogenomic test that analyzes your DNA to determine how your body metabolizes psychiatric medications. A simple cheek swab -- no blood draw -- is sent to a lab, and results return within about a week. The report categorizes over 60 FDA-approved medications into three groups: those likely to work well for you, those that may need dose adjustments, and those your body may have difficulty processing.
Roughly 40% of patients do not respond adequately to their first psychiatric medication. GeneSight helps reduce that trial-and-error cycle by providing genetic data to inform prescribing decisions.
Who Benefits Most
GeneSight is particularly valuable for patients who have tried one or more psychiatric medications without adequate results, experienced significant side effects, or had a medication stop working after an initial response. It is also useful for patients beginning treatment who want to optimize their chances of finding the right medication sooner.
How the Process Works
The test itself takes about two minutes during your appointment. Your provider swabs the inside of your cheek and sends the sample to the GeneSight laboratory. Results arrive in 5-7 business days. Your provider then reviews the findings with you and uses them to guide your medication plan.
Insurance and Cost
Most major insurance plans cover GeneSight, including Medicare and many Medicaid plans. GeneSight also offers a financial assistance program for qualifying patients. Out-of-pocket costs typically range from $0-$330. We can help you determine your coverage before ordering the test.
Limitations
GeneSight does not diagnose any condition. It provides data about medication metabolism -- one important piece of the clinical picture. Your provider combines GeneSight results with your symptoms, medical history, and clinical experience to make treatment decisions.
