What Is an ESA Letter?

An Emotional Support Animal (ESA) letter is a document from a licensed mental health provider that confirms your animal provides therapeutic benefit for a diagnosed mental health condition. Under the Fair Housing Act, an ESA letter allows your animal to live with you in housing that otherwise restricts pets -- without pet deposits or breed restrictions.

ESA letters are not prescriptions for pets. They are part of a real treatment plan for conditions like anxiety, depression, PTSD, and panic disorder. The letter must come from a provider who has evaluated you and established a clinical relationship.

How It Works

We do not run an ESA letter mill. We are a psychiatric practice, and ESA evaluations are part of the care we provide to patients who may benefit from an emotional support animal.

During your evaluation, we assess your symptoms, diagnosis, and whether an ESA is clinically appropriate for your situation. If it is, we issue a letter on practice letterhead that meets federal and state requirements. If it is not clinically appropriate, we will be honest about that and discuss other treatment options.

What to Expect

Your ESA evaluation happens as part of a psychiatric appointment. We review your mental health history, current symptoms, and how an emotional support animal fits into your treatment plan. Some patients receive their letter at the first visit. Others may need a follow-up appointment if the clinical picture is more complex.

The letter is valid for the duration of your treatment relationship with our practice. Landlords may require an updated letter annually.

Insurance and Payment

The psychiatric evaluation portion may be covered by your insurance. The ESA letter itself is typically not a covered benefit. We will be upfront about costs before your appointment. Cash pay is available.

Why It Matters

For people dealing with anxiety, depression, PTSD, and other conditions, an emotional support animal can be a real part of recovery. If you are struggling and think an ESA could help, schedule an evaluation and we will give you an honest assessment.
