What Is a Psychiatric Evaluation?
A psychiatric evaluation is a structured assessment to figure out what is going on and what treatment makes sense. It is a conversation with a trained provider -- not a personality quiz or an interrogation.
Evaluations are how we diagnose ADHD, anxiety, depression, PTSD, bipolar disorder, OCD, and more. If you have never seen a psychiatrist, this is step one. If your current treatment is not working, a fresh evaluation can find what was missed.
How We Do Evaluations
Your evaluation takes about 45 minutes. We cover symptoms, medical history, family history, medications, sleep, work, and daily functioning. We ask targeted questions to differentiate conditions that look similar.
You leave with a clear diagnosis and a treatment recommendation.
What to Bring
Photo ID, insurance card, and medication list. Old records or school evaluations help but are not required.
Insurance and Payment
We accept Blue Cross of Idaho, Regence, Aetna, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, and Idaho Medicaid. Cash pay is available.
When to Get Evaluated
If something has felt off for a while and you have been managing on your own, get evaluated. You do not need a crisis. You just need answers.
Related Conditions We Treat
PTSD Evaluation
PTSD happens after experiencing or witnessing something traumatic. Flashbacks, nightmares, constant alertness, and avoiding things that remind you of what happened. These are all signs. If any of that sounds familiar, a psychiatric evaluation across Boise and all of Idaho can help figure out what is going on and what to do about it.
Treatment for PTSD often starts with medication. SSRIs like sertraline and paroxetine are FDA-approved for PTSD and help reduce the intensity of symptoms. For nightmares specifically, prazosin can make a big difference. Our providers match the medication to your specific symptoms, not a one-size approach.
After diagnosis, we set up a treatment plan and schedule regular follow-ups to track how you are responding. PTSD symptoms can shift over time, so we stay on top of it: adjusting medication, checking in on sleep, and making sure you are getting the support you need.
Bipolar Disorder Assessment
Bipolar disorder is one of the most commonly misdiagnosed conditions in psychiatry. Many people are treated for depression for years before anyone identifies the manic or hypomanic episodes that change the diagnosis entirely. A thorough evaluation across Boise and all of Idaho can catch what others have missed and get you on the right treatment path.
Our assessment looks at your full mood history, not just how you feel today. We ask about periods of high energy, reduced need for sleep, impulsive decisions, and racing thoughts alongside your depressive episodes. These patterns tell us whether bipolar disorder is the right diagnosis.
Once diagnosed, treatment usually involves mood stabilizers like lithium or valproate, sometimes combined with other medications. Getting the diagnosis right matters because antidepressants alone can make bipolar disorder worse. We start treatment carefully and monitor closely in the early weeks.
