What is GeneSight?
GeneSight is a genetic test that shows how your body processes different psychiatric medications. A cheek swab is sent to a lab, and results come back in about a week. The report helps your provider choose medications that are more likely to work and avoid ones that your body cannot metabolize properly.
This is especially useful if you have tried medications before without success -- a common experience for patients with complex histories including PTSD, TBI, or multiple deployments.
Who Should Consider It
GeneSight is most helpful if you have tried one or more psychiatric medications that did not work, caused significant side effects, or stopped being effective. It covers over 60 FDA-approved medications for depression, anxiety, ADHD, PTSD, and other conditions.
How It Works
The test takes about two minutes -- a simple cheek swab during your appointment. Results return in 5-7 business days. Your provider reviews the findings with you and adjusts your treatment plan accordingly.
Insurance and Cost
Most insurance plans cover GeneSight, including TRICARE and many Medicaid plans. Financial assistance is available for qualifying patients. Out-of-pocket cost is typically $0-$330.
What It Does Not Do
GeneSight does not diagnose conditions. It gives your provider genetic data to make better prescribing decisions. It is one tool among several that we use to optimize your treatment.
